Misión Región is a photographic project launched by the Community of Madrid in 2022 with the aim of creating a contemporary portrait of the Madrid landscape and building a visual archive for the future.
Inspired by the great historical photographic missions, the project brought together 33 photographers—17 women and 16 men—who documented the 178 municipalities of the Community of Madrid and the 21 districts of the capital. Each area was given equal visual representation: ten photographs, regardless of its size, population or administrative significance.
My contribution to Misión Región consisted of photographing seven districts of the city of Madrid: Centro, Arganzuela, Chamberí, Chamartín, Tetuán, Retiro and Salamanca. The work offers a perspective on a diverse cross-section of the city, from its historic centre and residential neighbourhoods to the urban transformations, infrastructure and transitional spaces that shape contemporary Madrid.
Here, landscape is understood in a broad sense: not simply as physical territory, but as the result of the relationship between people and the places they inhabit. Architecture, public space, infrastructure, peripheral areas and ways of life come together to form a collective portrait of Madrid at a specific moment in its history.
The project resulted in an archive of 1,990 photographs deposited in the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid, conceived as a public cultural asset and as a document for the study and future memory of the territory.
Misión Región was directed by Paco Gómez, with Mónica Luengo as Scientific Director and David Rejano as Technical Director.
